Karnickel carnage

We had a lovely, busy and very fun day showing Mina around Vienna.  We took in all the major sights of the 1st district — we saw Michaelerplatz, the Hofburg, stopped at my favorite Starbucks for a melange, walked along the Graben, visited Stephansdom, (went home, took a nap), saw the Rathaus and walked around the Volksgarten.  Then, as a perfect finish to a very thoroughly Viennese day, we had dinner at Cafe Central.

We were all happy, but worn out, and as we finished our meal and pondered dessert, Dan offered to take the boys the few blocks home so Mina and I could sit and enjoy a peaceful and leisurely dessert.

We missed the boys, but it was great.  We’d been eyeing a couple Easter-themed options:  a creme brulee, whipped cream and mango puree combination made to look like a soft-boiled egg (and served in a real eggshell) and a white chocolate Easter bunny filled with passion fruit cream and rhubarb compote.  We got both.

We started with the egg, which was both beautiful and tasty, and then contemplated the bunny.  It was almost too pretty to eat, and I commented that it was probably a good thing that Benjamin hadn’t stayed — it looked more like a toy than a dessert, and it might have upset him if he saw us eating something he thought he was going to take home.

And then Mina said, “You know . . . it’s filled with *rhubarb compote* . . . it’s going to be *pink* inside.”
